It's time to talk about new collector books...

Star Trek: The Collectibles
By Steve Kelley
Krause Publications, Iola, WI
ISBN: 978-0-89689-637-6
$24.99

I’m a huge Star Wars fan, but ever since 1997, and certainly with the release of each of the prequel movies, I’ve found myself having to clarify that statement.  Nowadays, when I say I’m a Star Wars fan, I usually add statements like, “I’m a fan of the original, un-tampered-with films,” or, “I am a fan of the classic trilogy, not the abysmal prequel trilogy.”  As a collector, my Star Wars collection follows suit. It consists of items, mostly vintage, based on the original versions of Episodes IV - IV, with anything “special edition” or based on Episodes I - III summarily shunned.
What does all this Star Wars talk have to do with Star Trek? Well, if you’re a Trek fan akin to myself, meaning one who prefers the original crew to all the ones who followed, then Star Trek: The Collectibles is the book for you. Written by longtime Star Trek collector and fan, Steve Kelley, the 255-page, full-color book is filled with Star Trek collectibles, based primarily on the original Star Trek television series, and the six films featuring the original crew. It includes price values based on “mint to near mint, out-of-the-box / packaging,” and “mint to near mint, in-the-box / packaging,” descriptions and history of most of the product categories included in the book (from action figures to video and laser discs) and even a Foreword by Chris Doohan, son of the late James “Scotty” Doohan.
Lee’s Toy Review readers will be happy to note that the first part of the book includes 30+ pages of Star Trek action figures, toys and collectibles. The action figures section begins with Mego’s offerings in the mid-’70s, covers the various products produced by Playmates for the original crew between 1992 - 1999, and even includes items like Diamond Select Toys (DST) “Mego-style” Retro Cloth series of Star Trek dolls, and products by The Danbury Mint, Ertl, Galoob, Hamilton Gifts and Sideshow Collectibles. So if your Star Trek collection (like my Star Wars collection) focuses on this specific era of that Universe’s history, this is one publication you’ll want to get your hands on.  Live long and prosper.

Quote of the day

Robin: "Picked up the seal pulsator yet, Batman?"
Batman: "We're still over land, Robin, and a seal is an aquatic, marine mammal."
Robin: "Gosh, yes, Batman, I forgot."
